Many wonder if it is possible to correct health ailments through reverse osmosis (RO) water treatment? The problems with reverse osmosis systems require a little time to explain, so please bare with me.

What is reverse osmosis? Reverse osmosis is the first stage in reducing impurities found in the surface and groundwater. It is a process used by industries and used nearly a century ago that was very necessary back then but with new technology, it's not necessary at all. Economically, the problem with home reverse osmosis systems is that it's expensive. The units are very expensive to purchase, they are expensive to maintain and costly just to operate. The systems require a lot of electricity, so you can expect your electric bill to go up. The system creates wasted water and because of that, you can expect your water/sewage bills to go up.

I do believe that everyone should use a water purification system but the price of reverse osmosis may make people think that purification is unaffordable when it's not. The people who sell these reverse osmosis units market their product well and make you feel there are not other alternatives but there are and the alternative water purification systems and it's current technology are much better and cheaper as well.

If you are trying to correct your health problems through reverse osmosis, I have to ask you a question. What is your condition? Of course, you can't answer but please, let me give you a few examples.

If you need a kidney dialysis, you are addressing your heath problems through reverse osmosis because the system is used to remove impurities (urea) from the blood stream. If you are suffering from any other condition, there is no way to address your health problems via reverse osmosis. Why? Because when it comes to drinking water, reverse osmosis might worsen your condition.

The reason for that is because reverse osmosis removes the minerals of the water. Some of them are referred to as electrolytes. We need dietary minerals every day to remain healthy. They are a part of good nutrition. But the purpose of reverse osmosis was to demineralize systems in industries. You want healthy minerals, you do not want contaminants.

The delicate electrolyte balance allows all of the cells of the body to remain well-hydrated. Drinking distilled waters will not hydrate your body. The waters from a reverse osmosis system are quite similar to those from a distiller. So, from that perspective, the problem with home reverse osmosis systems is that they remove all of the naturally occurring minerals that may be present in your groundwater.

But the biggest problem with reverse osmosis is that it does not remove chemical contaminants that come from chlorine or byproducts unless additional steps are added to the process. Manufacturers are now including granulated carbon as a final step to reduce chemical content. And in this respect, the problem with home reverse osmosis systems is indeed tremendous.

Some of the chemical contaminants that are present in our surface and groundwater can be removed by granulated carbon. A multi-media block is needed, in addition to the granulated carbon, if you want to remove all the contaminants. But again, why add more to the cost that you will pay for a reverse osmosis system, the wasted water and electricity when you can purchase an affordable purification system that removes lead, cysts and thousands of chemical contaminants. You simply don't need a reverse osmosis system at all.

I hope by knowing the problems with home reverse osmosis systems, you'll see that it's not going to cure any health problems, it can possibly worsen a condition. But fortunately, there are other alternatives out there.

We can't correct our health problems through reverse osmosis but we can help provide our families with safe and pure water through other better purifying systems available. And at the same time, protect the environment.
