DIY Garage Door Trims

A common area where homes need help is the garage door trim. Damaged trim that is falling apart looks bad and wastes heating and cooling energy. Fortunately, you can fix trim with a fairly minor amount of effort.

The first step is obviously to purchase trim. Any home improvement store from the biggies to the mom and pop stores should have it. Once home, the next step is to measure the height and length of the door.

Guess what is next? Yep, you need to measure out pieces of the trim equivalent to the lengths of your garage door. Now use a miter to cut 45 degree angles on each end. We are trying to create a rectangle frame of your garage door.

Now it is time to attach the trim. Open the door to a point as close to horizontal as possible. Now lightly tack on the trim for each length. Once done, go back and securely nail the trim on every six inches or so.

Okay, you are not done yet. Those nails are exposed to the element, so putty them up. If you like, you can then paint the trim to match the color scheme of your home. If you do paint it, keep in mind you will have to repaint it in the future.

Even though you trim is a fairly small piece of the home, it carries a lot of impact from a color perspective. It frames the garage door, so painting it in contrast to the rest of the home will highlight it while matching the home color will not.

Repainting trims around any door on your home can really change the look of the structure. This is true for exterior and interior doors. Go bold to create a contrasting look and soft to help blend the doors in more.

Do you see how easy it can be to help your house stand out from the crowd? All it takes is one weekend project to really showcase that lovely home. Nothing is easier than adding garage door trim, though it is one thing that can be done all on your own.
