The roof on your home tends to be out of sight, out of mind. Despite this, it is one of the most critical elements of your home. It can raise the appeal and value of a home or take it down. A tile roof is a great way to improve things.

For years, the standard roof for most homes was some type of wood shake shingle. As the quality of homes improved and the environment changed, people started noticing wood roofs were not such a good idea.

There were a couple of clear problems. The first, of course, was your average wood shingle tends to be flammable during fires as seen every few years in Southern California. Second, the shingles are not good insulators, meaning high utility bills.

The clear winner in the current roofing debate is the tile roof. This roof stands in sharp contrast to the wood shingle approach. Why? Well, it does not catch on fire and it is very insulating and durable.

A tile roof is unique in that it is a part and parcel system. If there is a problem with one tile, it is simply replaced without having to tear up a chunk of the roofing. It is unheard of for tile roofs to fail in mass at the tile level.

Tiles are also a great choice for roofing when it comes to maintenance. Other roofs are easily damaged by sitting water, tree limbs and so on. This is not the case with a tile roof. Even if a problem arises, the repair is usually quick and cheap.

Getting a manufacturer to guarantee anything these days is nearly impossible. Tile roofs, however, are so reliable that this really is not a problem. Manufacturers will guarantee the tile roofing systems for forty years or more.

Tile roofing has one major advantage over most other systems. It does not burn. In fact, it is so admired for this quality that many communities now require new homes to go with tile roofs to prevent fire damage.

If you are looking for a roof that you know will last and protect your home from the elements, there is really only one choice. The tile roof is simply the standard these days whether you live in an area with fires or not.
