Planning Your Conservatory
Conservatory Materials A vital element to take into consideration when formulating conservatory design ideas is the materials you would like to use as, the materials not only have an effect on the overall style but fulfil different functions as well. The three main types of materials for the structure are PVC-U, Aluminium and Timber, with each material displaying its own benefits. Make sure that you make your choice based not only on style, but also function. In terms of the glazing, your two options are Glass or Polycarbonate. Polycarbonate is cheaper and easier to handle, making it ideal for DIY projects. That said, is far more prone to scratches and discolouration that glass. Glass is the more classic option and will stay better looking for longer – so it could save you money in the long run. Another bonus to glass is that you can get different types of conservatory glass. An example of this is self-cleaning glass, or even glass with a solar control feature, allowing you to enjoy the full benefits of owning a conservatory. Conservatory positioning The positioning of your conservatory is very important as it dictates how much sun you are going to get. North facing conservatories don't get direct sunlight during the cold winter months, so you'll need good heating and insulation. In the summer these conservatories are warm and bright but they do not get direct sunlight. In the northern hemisphere, south facing conservatories get the most year round sun. This can be countered by conservatory glass that has a solar control feature East facing conservatories get the morning sun and are ideal as breakfast rooms, while west facing conservatories receive good sunlight on summer afternoons and evenings, making them perfect to house plants which thrive on indirect sunlight. Conservatory size and function When thinking of conservatory design ideas keep in mind that the conservatory is an extension to your house. It shouldn’t dominate it in size or style. Also keep in mind the purpose your conservatory is being designed to fulfil. Whether you are looking at a conservatory for a dining room, sun room, kids play room or a winter garden; each will need to be approached differently. Does the thought of a gorgeous glass conservatory appeal to you? Hopefully now you are feeling much more confident to go out there and find a conservatory that suits you perfectly.
