Mattresses and pillows are the main topics people have the most trouble with. generally speaking, firmer is better for people who sleep on their sides, not on their bellies. A body pillow that is long provides more stability for your shoulder area. You may as well bite the bullet and purchase from a department store, discount stores are not high quality.
Mattresses Traditional Spring and coil based beds are difficult to purchase because the manufacturers play games with names and models to keep the consumer from making an informed decision. Some have complained to me that they are not even sure they are getting what they paid for. In this type you may make a better choice by asking questions about the components of the beds. The number of coils on the bed size you have chosen, the gauge of the steel in the coils will reflect firmness, layers of padding. Foam-Memory type The biggest complaints that I hear from memory foam is how warm they are. They tend to give off heat, which is not condusive to sleeping. I also hear that people get a sinking feeling as if it is hard to get out of the position they are in. Air Mattresses I have received mixed reviews, the negatives have been that when two people have a large size differential between them the system does not work well. Others have complained about the noise. Latex Mattresses Latex is my choice out of all of these. They are firm, yet still have the resiliency of a foam mattress, without the heat conductivity problem. You do not feel the sinking feeling with these, either. The price is comparable to a high end bed. Europeans have kept this secret long enough! Types of Pillows Choosing your bed may be easier than finding the right pillow. The orthopedic pillows are not my recommendation. They have a dip in them that does not support the neck. When looking for a pillow at the store, opt for firm ones that will fill in the spot between your head and shoulders. There are companies out there that sell pillows that are customized, and are not as expensive as you may think.
